FDA Warns Against Use of Injector to Administer Flu Vaccine

The FDA recently advised health care professionals not to use injector devices to administer influenza vaccines due to concerns about effectiveness and safety.

Currently, only one vaccine, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), is approved for administration by jet injector.

In contrast, influenza vaccines have been approved by the FDA for administration by needle injection or nasal mist sprayer only, and have not been evaluated for delivery by jet injection.

The FDA stressed that jet injectors represent a different method of delivery that has the potential to change the characteristics of an approved vaccine.
