Medicines Pose Greatest Risk of Poisoning to Young Children

Research shows that parents and other caregivers need to be more vigilant about keeping their toddlers out of the medicine cabinet. According to the research, children are twice as likely to be poisoned by medicines than by cleaning products or other household substances. The research further showed that emergency department visits for unintentional poisoning involved prescription or over-the-counter medication in 68.9% of pediatric cases, according to Daniel S. Budnitz, MD, of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, and colleagues. Children 5 and under accounted for 81.3% of pediatric accidental poisonings in the study.
